Last night, Assemblyman Hikind rose to support a resolution by his colleague, Assembly Member Rodneyse Bichotte, and expressed his profound sorrow for the Sassoon family, who lost seven of their children in an early morning fire on March 21, 2015, and for the community who assisted the family in their moment of great need.

“It was a funeral I will never forget,” said Assemblyman Hikind. “I stood next to the father, just a couple feet away, as the seven caskets were right next to him. I listened to a father describe his loss. The father spoke about people respecting each other, about the importance of husbands and wives getting along, and about recognizing what is really important in life. This is what the father spoke about. He accepted this tragedy-a tragedy that neither he nor anyone else could comprehend-and spoke what is really important, which is for people to recognize that we need to care for each other, we need to not get caught up with the petty things that at the end of the day are of no consequence. That’s what he said at the funeral with those caskets right next to him. It was one of the most remarkable things that I have ever seen in my entire life and a lesson for myself.”
