Assemblyman Dov Hikind wants to make certain that everyone has working smoke detectors and is using only the safest appliances. “We’re talking about saving lives,” he explained yesterday to a roomful of reporters in the hopes of his message carrying far and wide. “What happened in our community-losing seven children-is truly beyond comprehension. What are the lessons? We must do everything in our power to protect our loved ones.”

Working with The Home Depot, Dov handed out hundreds of free state-of-the-art smoke detectors with 10-year batteries. “People need these devices,” he warned. “It’s critical. Today we have free ones and tomorrow we’ll have more. If you have them at home already, check the batteries.”

The Assemblyman also explained the importance of using UL-tested and approved hotplates, crock pots and other cooking devices and not settling for appliances that are untested and may be dangerous. “All over our community, people are re-examining how they do things. Everyone-not just Sabbath observers-must be more conscientious regarding these matters matter. G-d runs the world and there are no guarantees, but let’s do everything in our power to protect ourselves, our families and our community from tragedies.”
