Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) applauded NY State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie today for making it clear that the DREAM Act should be kept separate from education tax credits.

“Education tax credits are the highest priority to my constituents and to many like-minded New Yorkers who know how vital and how fair and how life-changing these tax credits can be,” said Hikind, a key advocate for education tax credits since their inception. “I am delighted that the Speaker agrees that this is a separate issue and I respectfully request that the Governor separates these issues as well.”

The Democratic-led Assembly today is expected to approve the DREAM Act, which would provide tuition assistance to undocumented immigrants. Senate Republicans oppose the bill but support tax credit legislation, which Hikind and religious organizations strongly support.
