Survey Shows Local Gas Stations Charge Less than Brand-Name Stations

Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) and his staff toured Brooklyn on Tuesday to survey dozens of gas station prices, assessing the cost of regular unleaded, self-service gas in the area.

The survey results showed that mega gasoline companies throughout Borough Park and Flatbush charged more than the local stations did. An Exxon Mobile off 44th St. and New Utrecht Ave. saw the steepest prices at $2.14 per gallon and $2.26 for credit, with Shell and Citgo not far behind, coming in at $2.10 per gallon.

The local off-brand gas station prices, however, paled in comparison. AP Oil Inc., located at 65th St. and 13th Ave., rang in at $2.01 per gallon. Hikind and his staff also visited three separate BP gas stations in the neighborhood only to find gas prices nearly 10 cents cheaper by the gallon than the leading gasoline companies—$2.04 per gallon.

Meanwhile Coney Island gas stations were also surveyed, with Shell, BP and Mobile stations charging roughly 5 cents more per gallon than in Borough Park and Flatbush. One BP, off Coney Island Ave. and Avenue T, saw prices as high as $2.39 with a $2.29 cash option, despite a sign reading $2.09 per gallon.

“I believe people have the right to know what’s going on in their community. Everyone should be aware of the gas prices throughout their neighborhood,” said Hikind, who went on to reiterate that the survey was not to defer business away from more expensive gasoline at the larger companies. “This survey informs our residents, while pointing out the opportunity to find cheaper gas should they elect to drive around and seek it.”
