As reported, my staff recently spent time rescuing bags and bags of abandoned shaimos in Boro Park. Those bags of Chumashim and Gemorahs are waiting to be properly disposed of now, but there were also nearly 30 pair of tefillin thrown in the garbage. I have now hired a sofer to examine them and see if any are still kosher and can be donated to Jews who can use them. In fact, I received a letter from a commissioner in Los Angeles today who currently needs some tefillin for use by prisoners at the L.A. County Jail. I’m sure there are other places, too, that would be happy to benefit from rescued tefillin. I will keep you informed of our progress.
