Tons of shaimos, including shaimos abandoned last year in Boro Park and rescued by Assemblyman Dov Hikind’s staff, were given a proper, respectful burial this week under the supervision of Rabbi Yosef Schwartz, head of the Prag Yeshiva in Monroe and owner of Beth Genizah in Sullivan County, New York.
“For years we have been working with Rabbi Schwartz and Beth Genizah because he treats shaimos with respect,” said Hikind. “Beth Genizah has trucks in Boro Park and Williamsburg and has helped us dispose of shaimos when it was dumped in our community and elsewhere. Personally, I don’t want my shaimos in a landfill with dirty diapers and household garbage. Rabbi Schwartz makes sure that shaimos under his supervision is given a proper burial.
“For years I have been warning our community members to be careful about who they give their shaimos to. I was appalled to see holy books tossed on the ground this week alongside with bags of garbage. Unfortunately, this happens each year in our community and elsewhere.
“I can’t stress this enough: If you don’t have a comfort level with whoever you plan to give your shaimos to, keep it home.
Beth Genizah, has an office at 195 Lee Avenue in Williamsburg, also offers a shaimos pick-up service for residents in Boro Park, Midwood and beyond. They can be reached at 347-977-0030.
