In Albany, many of us continue to work hard to pass the education tax credit that would help so many private and parochial schools. This is a top priority to me and to many of my colleagues.
Under the plan, the NY State would offer up to $300 million each year in tax credits to New Yorkers who donate money for primary and secondary education. Half the amount would be earmarked for contributions to public schools, including a $100 credit for teachers who personally buy supplies for their classes. The other half would urge others to give to scholarship programs that make it possible for low- and middle-income kids to afford private-school tuition.
The financial boost to parochial schools and yeshivas would be enormous.
I applaud the State Senate leaders who included the credit in their budget proposal. Now we must hope this makes it through the Assembly despite union opposition.
Regardless, I will continue to support this important piece of legislation which would do such much good for our community.
